Description
Olallie Butte is the highest point in the Cascades between Mount Hood and Mount Jefferson. The summit of Olallie Butte lies wholly within the Warm Springs Reservation, but it can be reached by a former National Forest trail that is no longer officially maintained. The butte dominates the Olallie Lake Scenic Area, a plateau of shallow water-filled depressions left after the disappearance of an ice sheet.
The butte is one of the High Cascade shield volcanoes. Numerous pinnacles around the summit are the remains of lava conduits. There are two cirques on the east side of the mountain.
Remains of the old lookout site, abandoned in 1967, are still visible on the summit. The wooden lookout was later blown off its foundation in a windstorm. Views extend up and down the Cascades, as well as west to the Willamette Valley and east to the broad, canyon-etched uplands of the Warm Springs Reservation.
