Description
Monte Cristo is a peak at the north end of the horseshoe-shaped Monte Cristo Range west of the White Salmon River. You'll see the remains of the lookout here and a USGS marker. From here, you can get views of Mount Saint Helens across Indian Heaven as well as a good view south to Mount Defiance and Mount Hood. Mount Adams is partially obscured by a band of conifers, but you can see east over the dry Klickitat Plateau. Notable wildflowers include scarlet gilia and frasera, but the summit is dominated by a sunny display of woolly sunflower in early summer.
The Monte Cristo Natural Area Preserve, on the northeast slopes of the mountain, protects sensitive botanical habitat, including grand fir woodland, copses of white oak, and native grassland. It is administered by the Washington Department of Natural Resources.
