Description
During their overwinter at Fort Clatsop, Lewis and Clark delegated five men to head south 15 miles to this site. From early January to mid-February, 1806, the men worked 24 hours a day in shifts boiling sea water to make salt. Local Clatsop and Tillamook Indians helped the men establish camp. They returned to the fort with 28 gallons of salt for flavoring food and preserving meat for the long journey home.
