Moss-draped maples, Hall of Mosses Trail (bobcat)

Description

A short spur off the Hall of Mosses Trail leads to a grove of big-leaf maples (Acer macrophyllum). The trees in this extremely wet climate are dripping with thick layers of epiphytes (mosses and ferns) and support their own canopy habitat. Big-leaf maples have the largest leaves of any maple species and can live to be 200 years old. They are a Pacific Coast species, being found from British Columbia to southern California west of the interior mountains.
