Driving Directions

From John Day:

From the intersection of Highway 26 and Highway 395 in John Day (Main Street and S. Canyon Boulevard respectively), drive south for 10.1 miles and turn left onto Canyon Creek Lane (County Road 65) for Lake Creek Youth Camp; this road becomes FR 15.

Drive 13.8 miles, and make a left onto paved FR 16.

Proceed another 2.6 miles, and turn left onto gravel FR 1640 for the Strawberry Wilderness.

In 4.4 miles, stay left on FR 1640 at its junction with FR 1648.

After another 2.8 miles, keep right on 1640 at the tunroff for Indian Springs Camp.

Wind up another 3.1 miles, bearing right at the sharp bend that hosts the Roads End Trailhead and park at the end of the road.

Other information

  • This is the western terminus of the Sky Line Trail #385.
  • High Lake is only a mile away down in the basin below the Rabbit Ears.
  • It's a short, three-quarter mile scramble to the top of Indian Spring Butte from here.
