The Portland Hikers Field Guide is collaborative effort and has become a labor of love. Our goal is for it to become a great resource for hikers throughout the Northwest. This will not be possible without a lot of help from a lot of people, so we're always looking for more people to help out as editors. There are many hikes yet to be covered and many more can be improved with more information. A higher quantity of information will only enhance the site.

On the other hand, if quantity is one leg of success, quality and organization are the other two. The information needs to be accurate and presented to standard ways to best communicate to the wiki readers. To that end, we've done everything we can to ensure a standardized system. We've developed a schema and templates that must be followed for all pages. PortlandHikers.org welcomes your help, but we require that you get to know how things work before you contribute.  This means checking out the Field Guide, learning the basics of MediaWiki and also learning the schema and guidelines that are specific to this wiki.

*Stay calm! Don't be upset if someone else edits something you wrote. Often folks notice the article on the Recent Changes page and add or correct bits they notice. This is a collaborative project and people are just trying to help you out. If you need to talk about things for a particular article, use the discussion/talk page (each article has their own).

*When you make changes to a section of any article, work from the current version of the article rather than pasting in an older version. That way you avoid undoing the linkage, spelling, and grammar bits that contributors have helped fix. Not everyone is a wiki writing expert, but everyone can try to work with the material in a collaborative manner so that their information/spelling/linking/grammar mistakes can be covered by the skills and knowledge of others.

It's easy to help

If you have a small change head on over to the Field Guide Support Forum. There you can post and an editor will hopefully be able to include your changes to the wiki.

Things you might submit in the Support Forum:

  • A typo or small correction
  • A photo that you see missing, or that you think we could use
  • A description of a hike or destination that we don't currently have in the wiki. An editor can create a page based on the description you submit.
  • A description of a hike or destination and pictures. Check out existing pages for ideas. The more information you can provide the better.

Becoming an editor

For general guidance in editing a wiki, the Wikipedia help pages, or the Wikipedia Tutorial are great places to start. Look at those and then practice editing at the Sandbox.

For articles specifically geared toward Portland Hikers, take a close look at the Help and Guideline pages. These are required reading for anyone who wants to help out with the Field Guide.
