Description
Mount Saint Helens' May 1980 eruption caused a massive landslide that, in the main, coursed down the North Fork Toutle River valley. This huge volume of debris changed the landscape for many miles downriver. One of the results was the damming of Coldwater Creek, which backed up to form a significant new lake 165 feet deep and 5 miles long. At the west end of the lake is the Coldwater Lake Recreation Area, where you can picnic, launch boats or fish. The 0.6 mile Birth of a Lake Trail is also here. The western segment of the Lakes Trail #211 runs along the entire north shore of the lake.
