Description

War time can be tragic in a number of ways in a number of places. On August 1st, 1943, in the middle of World War II, a B-17 flying fortress on a routine patrol flight was headed north up the coast. It was unusually wet that day and Cape Lookout was completely shrouded in fog. To the pilots, apparently unfamiliar with the area, the long cloud sticking out two miles to sea looked like similar banks of clouds they had flown through before. The plane entered the cloud and crashed into the cliff face on the southern side of the Cape. This marker was put in place to commemorate the lives and bravery of the single survivor and the nine men that died that day.
