Driving Directions

Drive I-5 south through Salem and take Exit 253 for Highway 22, Detroit Lake, and Bend. After making the exit, turn left onto Highway 22.

Drive 49.2 miles and, just before Detroit, turn left onto narrow but paved FR 2223 (French Creek Road).

In 1.6 miles, make a right turn onto gravel FR 2225 to cross French Creek.

Come to a junction after 0.2 miles; Keep right here.

Drive a winding course up in good gravel (You’ll pass under powerlines and keep left at two minor junctions – at 1.9 and 4.8 miles respectively). After 5.4 miles on FR 2225, turn right on the 458 spur road.

You’ll be tunneling up in alleys of alder and willow and also skirting precipices for 1.6 miles (After 1.4 miles, you’ll pass the French Creek Ridge East Trailhead).

Turn left at the junction with the 461 spur, and head up 0.7 miles to pull out on the left opposite a wilderness permit box. Note that there is a washout on this spur road that requires high clearance to negotiate.

WARNING: FR 2225-458 sometimes has rock slides and is hemmed in with vegetation that can scratch your vehicle; drive slowly and be alert. Also FR 2225-461 has a washout that requires high clearance.

Fees / Regulations

  • Self-issued wilderness permit (if available)
