Description
This wilderness lookout, which was regularly used until 1963, sits on a commanding prominence of the Dickey Peak ridge. The current structure was erected in 1942. The surrounding rock meadows, which bloom profusely in the summer, offer vistas south to the Three Sisters and Mount Jefferson and north to Mount Hood and the Washington Cascades. All of the Bull of the Woods ridges are also visible, with nearby Big Slide Mountain looming large and Big Slide Lake sparkling below.
A sign on the steps proclaims the lookout is on the National Historic Lookout Register. Volunteers from the Sand Mountain Society helped to renovate the lookout in the early 2000s. The lookout cabin itself is shuttered down and locked with a cable, but you can still, as of 2017, go up the steps and take in the views from the balcony. You’ll see the outhouse below the lookout: one side is missing, but the seat still offers a magnificent vista towards Mount Jefferson.
The Bull of the Woods Trail #550 ends here and the Welcome Lakes Trail #554 drops down the south slope.
