Description
Birkenfeld Mountain is a peak on the horseshoe-shaped ridge that cradles Hamilton Creek. The Pacific Crest Trail winds between Birkenfeld Mountain and South Birkenfeld Mountain on the eastern leg of this horseshoe. Some of the area was scorched in the 1902 Yacolt Burn.
The Birkenfeld summit ridge is quite forested, but the remnants of a trail lead up the mountain's northeast ridge from an old logging road. The peak can also be accessed from the Pacific Crest Crest where it crosses the saddle to the south although this involves some plowing through vine maple thickets. Another approach from the PCT uses the northwest ridge via a large clearcut and the vestiges of an ATV track. There are limited views from the small summit meadow, which looks only east, but from various spots along the approach, you can get vistas to Three Corner Rock, Mount Saint Helens, South Birkenfeld Mountain, Table Mountain, Mount Hood, and the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge.
Wilhelm Birkenfeld was the owner of the lumber company that operated the Carson Mill in the 20th century.
