George Henderson (1915 - 2011) was an early loony hiker: At 14 he completed a one day return hike to Wahtum Lake from the Gorge (28 miles)! In the 1930s he was very active with skiing, hiking and climbing around Mt Hood. The book is richly illustrated and covers events such as the building and first circumnavigation of Mt. Hood on the Timberline Trail (Henderson et al), the building of the Timberline Lodge, the first ski tows on Mt. Hood, ski jumps, etc. The book is richly illustrated with vintage photos and is a treasure trove of information If you every wonder about the "Blue Box Pass" when you head to Bend on US26, you will find why it is so named in this book!
So if you an interested in information about this region in the period 1925 to 1945, this is a fun book (just skip the first 100 pages that cover his very fascinating childhood elsewhere). Should you live in Clackamas County, you can find the book in your library system.

Better to live in the wild - feel it, smell it, see it - and do something real that succeeds. - Jack Turner

I live in Clackamas Co. and I placed a hold on this a couple of minutes ago. There's still one more copy in Sandy Library that's up for grabs!
Later edit: It came in. I read it. The writing is plain. He tells his stories rather baldly, without embellishment, so you need to bring an interest in the subject matter to the book or you'll get bogged down. One note of interest to me. Apparently he and a buddy created the segment of the PCT that runs from Ollalie Lake Resort to Breitenbush Lake -- all in a couple of months!
