Fish Lake Guard Station

Post by cfm » January 31st, 2018, 8:23 am

Last week, a group of us stayed at the Fish Lake Guard Station, near Santiam Pass.

This is the view of Fish Lake from the porch of our cabin. It sits on a porous lava bed, and drains in the summer into the McKenzie River.

This is a historic site, a >100 year old remount waystation on the Santiam Wagon Road. A group of volunteers help renovate or maintain the structures, and the forest service rents out two of the cabins.

During a snowstorm in January, there aren't many visitors, it felt like we were occupying a ghost town, or the last people remaining after the apocolypse. Delightful area!

Wow, how lovely. We snowshoed in last year and came away with the same impression. It's amazing how close the station is to hwys 20 & 126, yet it doesn't get a lot of attention. The setting for the cabin above the lake is just gorgeous.
