the dangerous HCRH from Multnomah to Ainsworth/Dodson

Post by Chip Down » February 13th, 2017, 7:19 pm

I've seen at least a couple mentions of the Historic Columbia River Highway closure, nominally from MP33 to 35 (but actually longer than two miles). It's been suggested it's not particularly dangerous. For skeptics, here's documentation of the hazards:

Risk of arrest if you decide to move the cones and drive through. I saw somebody do it! I was tempted. Don't know why they don't park their equipment across the road. Arrow is one of the spots I visited later, or possibly the question mark at upper left. Hard to be sure from this little slice.

Displaced curbs.

Wildlife crossings.
3.jpg
Downed trees.
4.jpg
Rockfall.

Winos. (Inspired by this sign, I almost brought wine instead of beer the next day, but I had a challenging hike planned, so a bottle of wine would have been a bit much).
6.jpg
Bacterial contamination.
7.jpg
Flooding; errant streams on roadway.

Risk of temptation when you see these enticing ribbons of snow leading up a hill that normally be brushy. Where do they lead? Probably nowhere, but you'll fight the urge to spend all day finding out.

Rapture anxiety when you see this scene with no humans in sight.

The Scenic Hwy was open today as Peder and I drove by this morning on our way to Eagle Creek.
