Lately, REI seems to issue 20% coupons on a sporadic basis throughout the year, whenever they want to boost sales, but the one time that has been fairly predictable for the past decade or more is when the dividends are issued, which usually happens toward the middle or end of March.

It will come 10 days after you give up waiting for it and decide to buy something spendy.

Or, it'll come 10 days after that very expensive piece of gear you simply can't hike without breaks.

There seems always to be a coupon in late March, with the dividend notices. Others, as mentioned, are sporadic.

Since the one expensive piece of gear I want to buy (Exped UL7 Downmat) is not carried by REI, the 20% coupon won't do me much good. They have the much heavier non-UL Downmat and the UL7 Synmat (not nearly as warm). I'll have to go elsewhere for the pad I want. I never used a REI 20% off coupon last year. 20% off on a fuel canister or a pair of socks is less than the gas to drive there!

yeah, I sometimes use coupon for fuel canister, except now I'm using the $3 Burton canisters from Fred Meyer.

My Platypus 1 gallon water bag is getting old - yellowed and delaminating at edges just a bit. Maybe I'll use coupon on that, but not very expensive.

i have traditionally used the 20% off coupon to buy fuel canisters as well, since everything at REI is overpriced.

this year i wanna splurge for the ultimate survival technologies 30-day lantern for car camping...

the various online retailers are not much cheaper when factoring in shipping, so REI wins :)

My point is that the 20% discount saved on an inexpensive item is less than the cost of the gas to drive to REI (unless you live close to one, which I don't).

Like Jerry, I use those cheapo Fred Meyer canisters unless I'm going to be out in below-freezing weather. I miss GI Joe's, though; they carried the MSR canisters, close to home.
