The number of campgrounds varies, but you would have all kinds of hiking possibilities staying along the I-90, Hwy 2, Hwy 20 or Hwy 542 corridors in Washington.

I liked Beaver Campground in the Gorge area on the Washington side. Pit toilets but were pretty decent and close to everything. Near Olympic NP I enjoyed Queets.

Diamond Lake in the southern Cascades has some big campgrounds, also a couple of small stores/restaurants on its shores. Easy access to Crater Lake N.P., North Umpqua River + three wildernesses: Mt. Thielsen, Boulder Creek, Rogue Umpqua-Divide.
