Broken Top - next week?

Post by subra1228 » August 18th, 2017, 5:20 am

Hi,
We were supposed to be on the Trail Around Three Sisters today, but alas with the PCT closure an fires, it didn't happen. Currently thinking about the Broken Top Loop, but in another thread, someone shared the following: Bad smoke from Milli fire around Broken Top. It was OK Tuesday until afternoon and kept getting worse.

Anyone have any updates? I'm thinking this may need to be postponed as well........

Thanks!

I just got back from Sisters yesterday (Thursday). We hiked Tam McArthur Rim and on up to the Broken Hand area on Wednesday. There was very light smoke in the air around Three Creek Lake (just enough to smell it) but it cleared out as we hiked. Up on the rim, the views to the north were very murky but looking south was clear. That said, whether you will encounter smoke anywhere around the Three Sisters depends almost entirely on wind conditions. Wednesday night, we had dinner in the town of Sisters...from the edge of town we could watch the Milli fire five or six miles to the west. Flames could be clearly seen at that distance and a huge plume of smoke was blowing to the south. The air in town was perfectly clear but looking at the direction of the smoke we guessed that it might be very unpleasant around Broken Top.

We met some other hikers going around Broken Top in lieu of the Three Sisters. Good Luck.
