Aug. overnight trips with few mosquitoes?

Post by dgweston » August 6th, 2017, 12:40 pm

It's mosquito season, I know, but I'm hoping there are at least a few backpacking trips near Portland (2 hour drive-ish) that aren't too insane. Preferably without swarms of humans either. I figure anything by a lake or pond is out, but a creek or river should be fine. Any suggestions? Please and thank you!

[editted from 2 mile drive-ish :-)]

I think the mosquitoes are fast being burned out by the consistent heat. Larger lakes have fish and birds that help control mosquitoes, it is the small meltponds that cause the worst problems. Maybe Trapper Creek is the most safe choice for you, but I'm guessing that many places will be okay.

2 miles won't get you that far from Portland.

Well we all ride fixies. I'd like to see you pedal more than 2 miles out of PDX with a full pack, no breaks and a single speed!

Kidding of course. I meant 2 hrs, oops!
