McNeil Shelter ?

Post by ppendhar » June 22nd, 2017, 12:34 pm

Has anyone made it to McNeil shelter this year? I read reports that Road to TopSpur TH is open and people are hiking Bald Mt. Curious about snow report on McNeil cut-off trail ( climbers' route) and the longer route.

Virtually no snow as far as the ridge meadow you will hit a lot of snow where the ridge dips down and then climbs back up to the Climbers route which is mostly snow free.

I would expect the "regular" trail to be snow covered for some time yet but haven't been that way myself.

I was on Bald Mountain yesterday evening too. What time were you there? A bit later than I, from the light.

My own hand-held P&S effort:

Ha! From the Angle I'm guessing you were up on top of Bald Mt at the old lookout site?

We hiked past Bald Mt on the way down to the Muddy Fork crossing at about 6:00 and heard somebody up on the Bald Mt Summit. We hiked back out at 8:30 which is when I look the photo.

Appreciate the info and noted! Was looking to hike up to the tarn this weekend with my family. Figure the distance/elevation to that location would make it a reasonable destination for our younger hikers. :)

McNeil Tarn? there is no standing water up by the McNeil Shelter. Do you mean the two ponds down below the shelter on the Timberline Trail?

If so they looked like this last Sunday:
