Getting to Cooper Spur or east side of Hood (35)?

Anyone been up to Cooper Spur, Little John, Pocket Creek, etc. recently (it's Sunday morning, 1/15)? I'm wondering how 84 is from Portland, as well as how 35 is. I'm counting on having to put on chains (cables), but what I don't want to have to do is put them on and off a couple of times to get there. Maybe it's better to just take 26 over the mountain? Any suggestions?
