Ruckel Ridge and dogs
Ruckel Ridge and dogs
How friendly or unfriendly is Ruckel Ridge for dogs? Thanks!
Re: Ruckel Ridge and dogs
Pretty unfriendly, I'd say. Several spots require all fours on your part, plus you'd have to help Spot too. Also lots of places for Rover to rove over a cliff.

Agree with previous post. Wouldn't take my dog up there. One bad squirrel is all it'd take...

I'm "3rd"ing these sentiments. I've done it, and sort of regretted it halfway up. Had to carry her/boost her up in a couple of sections. She also ran back down a couple of times (couple hundred yards each time), which really sucked. We were already halfway up when she did it the first time so too late to turn around. I wouldn't recommend it unless you've got a really well-trained and athletic dog.

Went up Ruckel Ridge yesterday and, I gotta tell ya, the whole way up I was like, "Oh, HELL NO!", at the thought of bringing a dog up that. No, no, a thousand times, no! Neither man nor beast could have much fun in that situation.

I've taken dogs on it a few times, they always did fine. But... my dogs are mountaineering trained...
Regardless I would say that RR is very non dog friendly.

Might balk at doing the catwalk (can't believe nobody else jumped on the opportunity to say that )
Re: Ruckel Ridge and dogs
Mountaineering trained? Are you saying your pup can set a belay, use a jumar, etc. He's gone thru Mazama's Basic Climbing School, or has he made it thru Advanced Rock too? When I read this comment, it made me chuckle. I have no idea how a dog is mountaineer trained.
As far as dog-friendly vs. Fido will follow you anywhere, I'd say any knife-edged ridgeline is NOT dog appropriate (no matter how trained your dog is). Ruckel Ridge may not even be human appropriate. If you get injured, I think you have to crawl uphill or safety at some point on this route.
Eagle Creek, Munra Point and any peak where the thought of protection comes into mind is inappropriate for pets and children. Table Mountain with all of its lose rock falling from hikers above would also qualify in my conservative mindset.
There's just too many hiking options for you and your beloved pet/child to risk on vertical cliffs.
I'm sure Biscuit the climbing dog would not agree with me, but I would have the owner of that dog arrested for animal abuse. Live to hike another day has been my motto.
