What do you think about the Bull of the Woods Wilderness? I was thinking of a Silver King Lake and Whetstone mountain backpack.
Thanks

Re: Total Solar Eclipse, 21-Aug-2017
Also, what do you think about Olallie Butte? Someone mentioned it in this thread but no one responded. I was thinking about backpacking into Jeff Park, but I am concerned that we will not find a campsite. Also, if there will be a big crowd there the night before the eclipse, their campfire smoke gives me asthma. Finally, is there a south-facing viewpoint?
Thanks
Thanks

Ollalie Butte's summit is both high and barren, so it would provide excellent perspectives in all directions. Whetstone is not quite as open as Ollalie, in that tree cover reaches up pretty near to the top, but it would be a very good option compared to most places. Silver King Lake is OK for camping, but nothing wonderful.
Later edit:
campfire smoke gives me asthma.
There should not be any campfires in Jefferson Park, since it is a heavily-used alpine area and they are banned there. However, on an August 21 there is no guarantee there will not be wildfire smoke. To be honest, there are some selfish, senseless campers who ignore campfire bans, too.

I've got a few ideas, but I'm keeping them to myself. Seriously, this thread could become Google fodder for the entire Western Hemisphere...
And speaking of the entire Western Hemisphere, here's an Expedia.com map of properties with available rooms on August 20, 2017:
(For reference, here's the same map for the following Sunday, 8/28:)
I expect that within a couple of months, the Portland and Eugene icons will disappear too.

Remember that clear skies is all essential. The time for the total part of the eclipse is just a few minutes, you only get one try at this. Although it is August, clear skies not a guarantee for the Cascades. The safest thing seems to be to head east and find some remote spot in eastern Oregon. I was thinking of the Wind River Range in Wyoming but the prevalence of thunderstorms is worrying, even though the eclipse is in the morning. I think the Owyhee is in the zone of totality.

Ochoco Pass on highway 26 would be good that way, except try to find a nearby peak with good view all around

Point well taken, Adam Schneider. I thought that as a closed group, Google couldn't get in. My naivitee.

Thank god for weather forecasts though. At least we'll have a few days' notice about whether we'll need a Plan B In The Desert.drm wrote:Although it is August, clear skies not a guarantee for the Cascades. The safest thing seems to be to head east and find some remote spot in eastern Oregon.
There ain't nothing "closed" about OregonHikers.org.Love the Sierra wrote:I thought that as a closed group, Google couldn't get in.

Couldn't Olallie Butte access technically be closed off anytime the Warm Springs wanted to? Might not be the best to count on.
The Olallie Lake Resort cabins are all rented for a full week and were booked well over a year ago. There's a big group from Eastern Europe ( i forget which country) staying in the yurts.
