If you want to backpack and we on your own and be in the zone of totality, maybe aim for the Owyhee. Looks like it passes overhead there.
I had been thinking about going backpacking somewhere but now am thinking of taking advantage of the closeness and just getting in the car that morning and heading southeast somewhere.

There's the Woodstock I knew must be in the works. That should draw down crowding elsewhere at least a little I hope.
I still wonder what the entry situation for Painted Hills will be.

Another scheduling factor: PCT Days, the PCT-based festival they do in Cascade Locks annually, is Aug 19/20. So just in case you thought you might have some wilderness to yourself, there will be hundreds or maybe thousands of non-through-hiking PCT-lovers in town as well. I think the PCT is becoming kind of like the Grateful Dead. You don't have to be thru-hiking, people just follow it around in an old beat up VW bus servicing those who are doing the thru (or section)-hiking, the ones who don't want to hitch at every town break, and who can afford to drop a $20 bill on the camp followers for a solo ride. Or maybe PCT Days will be extended for one day and they all will stay in Cascade Locks. Honestly, there are people who spend the summer giving rides for money and then go live on the beach in Baja for the winter on the proceeds. But I digress . . .

From kgw.com: With eclipse in view, some hotels canceling reservations and raising prices
Many visitors who booked hotel rooms more than a year in advance of this summer’s total solar eclipse have had their reservations canceled as hotels raise prices. Customers say they’ve been told hotel rooms are either no longer available or must be re-booked at a much higher rate – in one case, for $1,000 a night.
NOT cool.

Yeah saw a story on Koin6 a couple of evenings ago of a Hotel in Lincoln City doing this.adamschneider wrote:From kgw.com: With eclipse in view, some hotels canceling reservations and raising prices

Re: Total Solar Eclipse, 21-Aug-2017
Today I woke up to an email saying that a room I had reserved for the 21st is "overbooked" and my reservation has been cancelled.

Be sure to give the Hotel involved all the bad coverage you can on social media and anywhere else people will hear about it.Webfoot wrote:Today I woke up to an email saying that a room I had reserved for the 21st is "overbooked" and my reservation has been cancelled.

I sent an email back to Orbitz to confirm that the message I received is legitimate, but I'll post details if it is.

It would be great if everyone cancelled their reservations and boycotted all the hotels that are doing this. Might teach them a lesson about the consequences of greed.
