From Clarno, it was a nice drive over to White River Falls...
This thing is Massive! A MUST see if you're heading out to the eastside! There was a substantial number of remnants of the old power station that sent power to the Dalles from 1910-1960...
Along the 197, on the way back:

White River Falls rocks, especially in springtime when the water is up. We were there two weeks ago and 6 or 8 salmon were trying to jump up the lower falls. They were not having much success.

Clarno is a good distance to the southeast of White River Falls. White River is just a few miles off of Hwy 197 between Mauipin and The Dalles (closer to Maupin).
I love going there in the summer to swim. Used to be the river was VERY deep there along the rocks, but the last time I went (2 yrs ago?) it had filled in with sediment. I've never seen it so green!

I just did a trip last month out to Malheur NWR. We then drove north from Burns to John Day and back west along 26, hitting the Sheep Rock and Painted Hills units of the Fossil Beds. It was an incredibly long drive (I never thought I'd get to Prineville and think, "I'm almost home!"). However, it was one of the most beautiful and diverse landscapes I have seen in Oregon.
Thanks for sharing the pictures. It was fun to see some the same spaces I just visted from a different perspective.
