Tam McArthur Rim, June 23rd.

Post by Don Nelsen » June 28th, 2018, 4:38 pm

I'd had enough of hiking in charcoaled forests for awhile and took a break last weekend in Central Oregon. So much to do there and such fine scenery. The Tam McArthur rim is really exceptional though, so that hike was the premier event.

The hike starts about 18 miles south of Sisters on a good road - paved for about 16 miles and good gravel for the last two.

Other hikers on the trail: 12
Dogs: 2
Mosquitos: only in the shade and not too bad. A light wind kept nearly all away. Bit twice, no big
Temperature: 60, light wind
Snow on the trail: a few spots for very short distances

6.3 miles
1,245'EG

I went a ways past the "End of Trail " sign for the views and one could keep going for miles but I had a long drive home. Anyway, a beautiful day for a very scenic hike:

Thanks, that's a really nice area. Not a lot of snow.

I bet one could do a lot of hikes now on the east side of the Three Sisters.

Looks like it was a great day for hiking down there! I never get tired of the blue skies in Central Oregon.

It does look like the snow is melting off fast and the high country will be accessible soon, if not now! :D

Looks like you had a beautiful day. Such interesting clouds in some of the pics.

Those rough contour patterns in the blue areas of the sky are weird. Must be an artifact of the camera or the resizing algorithm

yes, jpg compression of the gradient. I'm sure the originals shot on whatever camera would not have rough gradients.

Those rough gradients are odd. I usually don't see that. I've reposted the last three shots at the original resolution and it's fine now. I wonder, is there a ratio of original to resized that would shrink the photo for ease of posting and storage conservation and not have the gradients?

Yeah, the contour patterns are gone.

I just happened to notice it, after someone said there were interesting clouds.

I believe the new software automatically resizes, I wonder what that does.

Something better to think about than the country ripping itself apart? :)

The forest service site is showing that fs road 370 is closed to snow, but I am guessing by your trip report that it is open. Is this correct and can a small sub compact drive it right now?
Thx
