Elk Medows by way of Polollie Creek TH

Post by gorgeittech » May 21st, 2018, 2:59 pm

Had a little bit of everything on this hike it seems like. I started out from the trail head at just after 7 in the morning. After leaving the parking lot, go to the top of the initial trail which is very steep if you've ever hiked this, and realized I forgot my sunglasses. Due to the nature of this first incline, I decided against going back for them which turned out to be fine.

Starting out came across some beautiful forest views of the green foliage that was sprouting up and starting to bloom

I had been up here on part of the trail last weekend, and they have since done some trail maintenance to the area but only about 1/2 past the wilderness boundary for the location

Came across this old tree, always amazed at the burn scar inside this old tree, and how its grown back

Farther down the trail into the area, they hadn't done much clearing, and the bridges in the area could use some work, but I guess it is wilderness after all, and you take what you can get sometimes.

I crossed the creek which wasn't to bad to fjord, I'm 6'4" and it came up half way up my calf early in the morning, and a little high but moving quicker that afternoon as the melt off started to be more with the sun shining down. I ended up having to get creative in going over downed trees, and at one point, had to crawl under one to get past it

Was a cool to see all the water that creates these tunnels and openings all over the forest as the snow melts off

I walked further, and came to the old burn scare which proved to be an interesting mix. There was alot of mud and had to navigate around this as I traveled, saw a lot of coyote scat on the trail, most of which was fresh in the past 24 hours, and some fresh paw prints in the mud and snow. I came to snow about 3/4 of a mile from the meadows, and was post hole'ing a lot of it, as I was wearing my Ultra Trail runners that I hike in, my feet were starting to get wet, and cold from the snow, and I decided to turn around, as I figured the meadow would be covered in snow by the look of things

I made my way back stopping a few times for snacks, and to just enjoy the scenery of the forest, and enjoy the hike. I hope to return in a month and hopeful the meadow has melted its winter coat, and the flowers will be in bloom for some better pictures.

Here are my times with no break included to give you a sense of my pace. I will note, I carry a full 30lb backpack when I hike regardless to keep myself use to the weight.

Miles Hiked 12.0
Avg. Pace 27:08 Min/Mile
Duration 5:58:04
Elev Gain 2155'
Starting Elevation 2636'
Max Elevation 4830'
Time Start 7:20
Time End 1:30

Try resizing your photos to 640 x 480 pixels. Mods, what's the current default photo size for the site?

Many photo editing programs allow resizing. I copy the photos I want to use in my post into a sub folder labeled "small". I then open the photos in this folder and crop, color adjust, resize.

I post the down sized photos to my Flickr account, adjust orientation in Flckr, and then copy the URL generated by Flickr to my post.

Sounds tedious, but not that bad, and my photos come out OK.
I keep making protein shakes but they always turn out like margaritas.
