Dog Mt - Flowers! - 2018-05-15

Post by dmthomas49 » May 17th, 2018, 6:58 am

Hiked Dog on Tuesday with clear skies and mild temps, 50s. As usual, it was windy and cool at the top. Thought it was interesting how the blooms are all facing East towards the sun. I wonder if they move during the day to follow the sun?

Arrived at TH at 7:40 with about 15 other cars. By the time I finished, cars were lined up looking for spaces.

The flowers are almost at full bloom. At the top meadow, they still have some blooming to go.

The mountains were all very visible.

Finished at about 10:40 with a packed parking lot.

I'm gonna try and get up there next week, should be great still.

The main debate: early or late? Before or after the crowd?

With the flowers in bloom now, I prefer early. You never know if you will get a space when coming later in the day. There were about 5 cars waiting for someone to pull out when I finished. I also noticed people parking East off 14 from the parking lot. Not sure if this is legal.

I drove by today and at 11:00 AM, parking lot was full with a few cars circling. 6 cars to the west at Grant lake and folks walking down Hwy 14 between. Not so safe, methinks. Lots of cars parked along the road too. I decided for plan B and did some serious exploring on the Collins Point Slide instead. Note to self: Get up earlier than 9:30!

Sounds like the permit scheme will need to be expanded to all seven days of the week.
