Steigerwald Wildlife Refuge
Re: Steigerwald Wildlife Refuge
Lovely photographs of a favorite place. I love the marsh hawk in the grass!
(This time last year, we were delighted to espy a sea lion heading up the river and then 30-odd herons "grazing" in one of the pastures downstream along the river trail)

Yeah the Herons formed a big Rookery in the tall trees by the long bridge, but you probably have better light from that angle; Maybe I should go exploring that section?walrus wrote:Lovely photographs of a favorite place. I love the marsh hawk in the grass!

It's a Male Northern Harrier, he's been out a ton lately, and will shock you by how close he'll fly and you're then scrambling to get your camera on 'em! Luckily there's generally an east wind, so they tend to fly into the wind and will hover in a lot of cases, so you'll have plenty of opportunities to see 'em and get photos!
Here's a few others of him:
Male and Female Courtship Typically you'll see the female about 8-to-1 when you visit...
