wild rogue loop feb 2018

Post by retired jerry » February 12th, 2018, 3:42 pm

Thanks to VM for mentioning this and putting in the field guide
http://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guide ... _Loop_Hike

I drove to Tucker Flat and did loop counter clockwise as recommended. Camped at mile 5.3, and again where trail reaches Rogue River trail. I could have camped at Panther Camp which is about half way on the loop trail, there was a small stream, probably dry in later spring.

Those two stream crossings were thigh high. I took off socks, crossed, dumped water out of boots,...

The loop trail is not used a lot so there were a few trees to climb over but not too bad considering

And then there were those two ticks - I should have treated my boots, gaiters, and pants with permethrin

I got 6 nights total with no rain, didn't bother putting my tent up.

On the way out it snowed:

The last time I tried to get to Tucker Flat my car got stuck in the snow so I had to turn around.

I'm sure that snow has already melted. I saw a couple patches when I was hiking and driving in.

Many thanks for the account, Jerry. I am planning to do this sometime. I sounds like, optimally, this is a good April/May loop?

May - starts getting too hot there?

I think winter is best. I do about one trip per year on the Rogue. You have to look at weather reports, the storm track often goes North, through Portland/Washington/B.C. and Southern Oregon is nice. Like when I was there.

Sometimes there's snow which makes it impassable to me.

We did the Rogue River Trail in April 2016 and had a few clouds but otherwise great weather. We did the Wild Rogue Loop in late June 2017 and while it was hot, it wasn't too hot. The first day was the hottest - after that we were under trees or along the Rogue. So watch the weather and if a clear stretch opens up in April or May or early June, go for the Loop!

In 2016 & 2017 we didn't see any ticks on our Rogue backpacks. I've gotten 1-2 so far this year but hikers down here have reported being swarmed. So 2018 may be the year of the tick!

Planning on doing a lolipop loop from Foster Bar in mid-May. I have heard the bears can be active on the lower Rogue. Bear canister suggested?

Yes, they are. There are bear proof structures (hoists, boxes, fences) at several of the established campsites (locations) between Foster Bar and Marial (more than there are between Marial and Grave Creek) and you should be able to use those. If you're thinking of camping wherever, then having a canister might not be a bad idea.
