I wish I got a picture!
We had camped at Dollar Lake and were returning in a bit of a hurry, and I had stupidly buried my DSLR down in my pack, thinking "there's nothing here that we haven't seen before" and alas, blew that opportunity. Oh well... maybe there will be a next time?

Interesting that's a similar area to where I was.

Honestly I can't even imagine 30 feet away. I think it was a full grown black bear at no closer than 50 yards and that was close enough for me.

I feel better reading your post. I was hiking Badger Creek trail last year and ran into a bear on the trail. Not sure if it was black or any other color because it scared the hell out of me; yelled hey bear and it took off. I spent the next hour hiking out yelling "hey bear".

What day of the week was your overnighter? Were there plenty of available spots to camp since you left the TH in the early afternoon? Thinking about heading up there this Saturday.
