Grassy Knoll 6/17/17
Re: Grassy Knoll 6/17/17
The potholed road is so bad that I have stopped going there. The flat sections lull you to go faster and you always are unable to see the next hole coming up in the shadows. Maybe some people can stick to driving 10 mph on a smooth road for miles knowing that an invisible pothole is coming up - somewhere, but I can't. Or maybe it is the full-length light scratch on my car from said brush mentioned above. I live east so I come in from the other direction (Little White Salmon area) and they are both the same.

Ha! Hey Roman, I was there the day after you, on Sunday 6/18, since it was forecast as the better weather day of the weekend for views. Early on, not so great, but as the day went the clouds cleared making for some really nice views. Took a few of the same pics as you. I forgot how steep this trail climbs from the start, and after riding a bike from the PCT trailhead 10 miles to the west, I was mighty tired by the time we crested Big Huckleberry.

How was Road #68 from that direction?? I just passed its junction on Panther Cr Road yesterday, didn't realize or would have checked it out.miah66 wrote:after riding a bike from the PCT trailhead 10 miles to the west, I was mighty tired by the time we crested Big Huckleberry.
Did you hike all the way back on PCT from Big Huckleberry, then drive east and retrieved your bikes?
Re: Grassy Knoll 6/17/17
Yes exactly. Great ride and hike. Not so fun of a drive, but doable if you have patience and time and a car with adequate clearance.

Did I happen to run into you on the summit of big huckleberry??
It was later in the day, maybe 4:30pm or so.

There's a much better way. Just drop down from Crest Camp, on the southern edge of Indian Heaven.drm wrote:The potholed road is so bad that I have stopped going there.
We did that on 7/3, and enjoyed both an easy drive and a delightful hike...

Better for a bearded enduro-hiker perhaps, impossible for others.
Re: Grassy Knoll 6/17/17
Ha! Well, it was about 20 miles and an easy, rolling 3000' of elevation gain, or so, yeah. Enough to leave you feeling like you'd been somewhere.Webfoot wrote:Better for a bearded enduro-hiker perhaps, impossible for others.

My back would feel like I had been somewhere alright; Hades I think they call it.
I prefer the less-than-a-mile hike to my first visit of Spirit Falls yesterday, which as I'm sure you know has a little challenge of its own.

Got as far as finding the trailhead one evening, as we headed back into town. Still haven't taken the plunge down that embankment. Someday!Webfoot wrote:I prefer the less-than-a-mile hike to my first visit of Spirit Falls yesterday, which as I'm sure you know has a little challenge of its own.
