Cloudcap and the Cooper Spur Shelter - 2017/06/04

Post by Guy » June 5th, 2017, 10:14 am

A quick Trip Report / Snow update for the North Side of Hood!

The road up to Cloudcap Inn is gated but from what we could see, any remaining snow drifts covering the road would only be in the last couple of miles.

We hiked up through the Cooper Spur Ski Resort to join the Polallie trail at the top next to the resorts only chair lift.

The Polallie trail is snow free but the post fire low Brush is encroaching on the trail, if more people dont start hiking this trail I think it's in danger of being lost.

We hit snow near the top of the trail then headed off through the trees in the direction of the Cooper Spur Shelter.

The long slog!

Ran into 4 other folks who had spent the night at the shelter but appart from that we had the mountain to ourselves all day.

Obligatory jump shot :)

Ramen for Lunch!

Somebody hauled in some firewood!

After lunch we made our way over to the Elliot Moraine and made our way down to the Cloudcap Inn.

We hit snow again once we got back down into the trees.

The road was melted out at the Cloudcap campground but all the picnic tables and camp spots are burried under snow. Surprisingly the water was on which provided us with a cool and refreshing drink!

We didn't fill out a permit!

40 winks in the sun!

Image

Earlier in the day we had spotted 3 folks climbing Snow Dome.

Image

Now we could see their ski tracks in the snow.

From here it was down the slope and along the road to the Tilly Jane Camp.

Image

At Tilly Jane most camp spots are still completely snow covered but a couple were completely melted out and ready for use!

The Poor old bunk house continues to deteriorate...

From here is was just a snow free walk down the Tilly Jane Trail.

All told about 3200' of EG at just over 9 miles.
A few more pics of the day here.

Did you just drive on Cooper Spur Road, or was part of the driving approach on Cloud Cap Inn road? What's the condition of the road going up there? I have a Ford Escort I'd be taking.

The road up to the Cloudcap Inn is still closed and gated just beyond the Cooper Spur Ski Resort. Only option right now is to hike up from the trailheads next to the closed gate. Road to the gate is fine.
