In keeping with the rather shortish but worthy treks of late, here's one that's been on my to do list for a few years but any number of things interfered, most recently bridge damage that kept the trail closed most of last year. The trail is open and in excellent condition now, not counting the random muddy spots encountered everywhere this spring. The trail crosses Little River that merges with the North Umpqua River at Glide on an arched bridge that is wheelchair accessible, but slightly steep at both ends. A second arched bridge further in is not accessible without some heavy lifting. The trail itself is uphill almost all the way going out but only steep in a few places where you go uphill going uphill. There are numerous flat stretches to ease the pain. Wolf Creek - and Little River - during all this runoff were both flowing with strength and passion. By August both will be memories of what they are right now. The falls are about 1 1/4 mile out and barely visible at first because of the dense foliage, even now. First you see the lower section pretty well, then a glimpse of both sections but the upper is partially hidden. The trail continues on up to a fenced off viewing area that faces the upper section head on. In summer both sections can be thin ribbons but last week they were as full and menacingly loud as anything the Gorge offers. The hike back is pleasantly downhill. Overall, the forest is gorgeous - almost rain forest quality in spots with mosses and ferns. I encountered several families with small l kids - it is a popular trail.
A secondary treat to this area is that you pass Cavett Creek Covered Bridge on the Little River Road out to Wolf Creek Trailhead and parking. There are also numerous other waterfalls further back along Little River Road and Cavett Creek Road. We are heading out the Umpqua River tomorrow and want to hike to Wolf Creek Falls. Tried last year, but the trail was closed for bridge repair.
Looking on Google Earth, there is a small parking lot at the trailhead. We will be in a 25' Sprinter Van. Will there be room to park there or somewhere nearby?
