Deschutes River 2/24/2017

Post by retired jerry » March 3rd, 2017, 7:38 am

Great time to go up Deschutes River. I spent a couple nights.

It barely rained as is typical when it rains in Portland. This is my go to spot when the weather's bad on the west side. The Deschutes River is right about at the low spot for rain east of the Cascades.

Looking down at Harris Ranch - tiny bit of snow left on the other side of the river:

Not much snow left on the trail:

The house is slowly collapsing:

Nice grassy spot to pitch my tent:

that is, of course, home made :)

half a pyramid tent, with the other side (a rectangle) replaced by a triangle

I think you just sunk my battleship, Jerry......let's see if I got this right: - - a pyramid, which consists of a polygonal (typically square) base and triangular sides with the apices of the triangles coming together at the vertex......

then you replaced the other side (a rectangle) with another triangle???

I'm looking at the photo of the tent thinking man, that is one cool structure, then I read what you said, and I have to go back and look at the picture some more. I knew I should've paid more attention in geometry class. You did what to what where and how? Obviously you done it good.

The base of a pyramid tent is square, like 9 feet, with a center pole right in the middle

I only sleep on one half so I leave that as is, but the other half I turn into a triangle to save some weight and it's also a little easier to find a spot to pitch it. And I shorten the width a little.

That's pretty crafty - thanks. That sure would cure a lot of weight issues.

MLD Duomid is popular and pretty similar, except it's just rectangle base 9 feet x 5.5 feet. To provide a place to sleep, you just shift the bottom of the pole so it's at an angle, or you can have two poles in "A" shape. That has a pretty low weight.

We just did a 2-night backpack from Macks Canyon down to the state park. Wonderful sunshine much of the time. Great escape this time of year from Portland rain and Gorge snow.
