Wauna Viewpoint Ice and Landslide Monday 20Feb2017

Post by cujames2103 » February 22nd, 2017, 12:22 am

On Monday, myself and a friend hiked to the top of the viewpoint. The first mile is passable, but after that there is nothing but steep sloped snowpack, ice, and, at the top near the final 3 switchbacks, a large landslide. We were forced to crawl up the landslide which I wouldnt recommend without proper gear.

These warning posts always serve to entice me. :D
I've actually been considering some winter exploring in the terrain between Wauna Viewpoint and Wauna Point (which is much higher up and much more difficult than Wauna Viewpoint). But damn, now I have one more thing on my to-do list. :|

No pics?

BTW, you probably couldn't see it under the snow (and maybe you already know from earlier trips) but there was a slide up there a while back (long before this winter) that blew the trail out, and it hasn't been properly restored. So I guess we're seeing another in a series.

Thanks for the report, and congrats on your debut post.
