Latourell Falls hike plus a look at a very icy Vista House

Post by Don Nelsen » January 19th, 2017, 5:02 pm

I just can't seem to get enough of this great snowy/icy weather so went out again today to see what I could find.

84 was still closed but there are work-arounds to an extent. First, I hiked the road down to the Vista House to check that out. There was a DOT guy stopping folks at the larch Mt. Rd. junction but hiking the road was ok. Here are a few pics:

You can see that the cold air hasn't been entirely flushed out of the gorge in this view.

Next, I went on to Latourell Falls. I had the route entirely to myself and as I hiked along, I could hear the occasional snap of a branch breaking under the strain of the ice.

That concrete outhouse at the parking area has proven its worth!:

I think that the tree that hit it would have completely crushed a frame structure but this is all it did:

Here's a better view of the interface between the warmer and the colder air:

You're the man, Don! I heard it was going to rain so stayed home with my tail between my legs. I'm such a loser! :) Great photos!

What are the I-84 work arounds?

To get to Latourell, you park at MP 1 on the Larch Mt. Road and hike down a one-mile long connecter road to the scenic hwy. To return to the Portland area through Corbett, take the road from there down to I-84 and you will have the freeway all to yourself in the westbound direction. I think you might access the old hwy via Brower Rd. and then down Palmer Mill road, but I'm not sure. I didn't try today as I was running out of daylight and didn't want to put chains on for the Palmer Mill Rd. descent. (I've seen what cars look like after going off that road!!

Edit: In addition, one could take Hanes Road to Alex Barr Road and access the old hwy but after seeing how many trees and branches were down on the route I took, driving might be impossible for the time being:

The road I took is in blue on this map:

Edit: I just posted a video of the Vista House:

Palmer Mill Auto Descent in those conditions, that would be a class 5 adventure all on it's own :)

Wow. That ice buildup on Vista House looks intense. It also looks REALLY cold out that way!

It was really cold to do that but when I showed up early afternoon today it was in the mid to high 40's. As I hiked down to the old hwy though, it got colder and colder! It was about 35 by the time I got to Latourell Falls. Wish I had gone up there yesterday - that must have been an amazing sight.
