McNeil Point and Beyond

Post by dfs1109 » September 21st, 2016, 8:38 pm

First trip to McNeil Point and beyond! Worth the effort to keep going further up past McNeil Point. Close to 11.5 miles and trail is well marked.

yeah, great area, and there's more for future trips

you didn't do the direct "trail" from McNeil Point down to Timberline Trail

and go between McNeil and Barret Spur

or over to Sandy Ice Caves or continue to Yocum Ridge

I'm familiar with all of those and no I didn't get the chance to hike them. However, the ice caves is something I am interested in doing in the winter so I can venture inside the caves a little more safely. This was kind of a recon hike for that one to be sure I could find my way to the caves.

I've been doing recon hikes for years, someday I'll have done everything possible

Yeah, maybe ice caves more stable when it's colder. Maybe in a month or two it will be colder but not snowed in.

Nice report, looks like I was there the same day - maybe you passed me on the way up (I was waiting for things to clear for sunset, and came to the shelter around 6:15pm). Good day to be on the mountain, surprisingly cool temps - it felt like mid-October.

I made it back to the trail head around 530 so we must have pasted each other. I was the guy in yellow pants and camo army hat. It was around mid afternoon that the wind pick up and temps dropped for me too!
