Hood River to Mosier Creek Falls - 2016/05/15
Hood River to Mosier Creek Falls - 2016/05/15
Opening pic
Our original plans were scuttled by rain yesterday morning so we decided on a Pedestrian walk from Hood River along the old Highway to Moiser. An easy 6 miles one way to downtown Mosier.
The trip out was very quite just a couple of cyclists, runners and lots of snails out on the trail enjoying the rain.
The old tunnels are cool but it's a shame this old outside viewing area is now closed off to the public.
I wasn't a big fan of the bars on the tunnel adits (Windows) one of them has an excellent view in Eighteen Mile Island if you stick your camera through the bars!
Shortly after exiting the east side of the tunnels there is a great view point affording both east & west views.
(Some folks just have a hard time staying off the grass )
We continued on to the East Trailhead then walked down the road into Mosier.
Through town and then up a short trail to the old Mosier Pioneer Cemetery.
From here we walked a short distance on to Mosier Creek Falls.
Back in town we stopped at the Thirsty Woman for a lunchtime pint before heading back to Hood River.
On the way back we noticed an unsigned trial leaving the road before it begins to climb up to the trailhead, we were pretty sure that it must link up to the trail & just cut off the road walk section which it did nicely (blue trail on map, click to enlarge).
All in all an enjoyable walk just shy of 13 miles on a rainy Sunday.

Very cool report. that looks like a nice way to spend a drizzly day.
I really like Mosier Creek Falls. Took a swim there a few years back and my daughter had a great time. The walk through the settler cemetery certainly adds to the interest level as well.

Everybody should have a list of rainy-day hikes. I don't, so I just stuck to my plans Sunday. Miserable, but generally successful. Your Sunday looks interesting, so I'll put it on my rainy-day list.

Thanks guys, yeah I bet those falls get pretty busy on a hot Summers day. Need to go back and check out the rest of that Friends Mosier Plateau trail sometime too.

The Tom Sawyer in me would like to ask: can one still get to that area? Is it actually illegal to do so or merely discouraged?Guy wrote:The old tunnels are cool but it's a shame this old outside viewing area is now closed off to the public.

Access would be from one of the two windows that are blocked off with those giant metal gates. A skinny person could fit through a small hole underneath the gate. I was all for giving it a try but my hiking partners told me I was kidding myself if I thought I'd fit through. They also promised to leave me where I was if I got stuck half wayWebfoot wrote:The Tom Sawyer in my would like to ask: can one still get to that area? Could a 130 lb fellow fit through? I might have to give it a go.
Regarding the snails on the HCRH trail, were any of them headed west? I may have seen one of them just east of the Eagle Creek stairs on Sunday:

Thanks for the tip, Guy! Finally got around to this on a slightly drizzly Sunday (10/16).
And no, nobody bigger than a cat could get under that fence. I'm bringing my oxy/acetylene torch next time.
