Greetings-
Be safe out there at Eagle Creek. Very icy and many people not prepared. They called search and rescue for a gentleman who fell and hurt his knee. If you are going out to this hike/backpack trail bring trekking poles and those spikes that strap onto your boots. I watched person after person falling down and hanging onto the cable for dear life, or just sitting down and sliding down the trail on their backsides.

Re: Eagle Creek
Ah that's too bad... I was actually going to try and hit up Tunnel Falls for the first time tomorrow. Thought there might be a little ice but it sounds like there's too much for me to feel prepared enough. I appreciate you sharing the conditions!
Re: Eagle Creek
Pick up a pair of Katoola Microspikes and you'll be fine. They provide superior traction on those icy surfaces. But be sure to hang onto that cable just in case.neilsonw wrote:Ah that's too bad... Will definitely put those on the list as I add to my gear. I'm relatively new to hiking and haven't done a lot in the winter, so thanks for the suggestion!Crusak wrote:Pick up a pair of Katoola Microspikes and you'll be fine. Yeah, there's ice in spots. We risked it and didn't put on microspikes until Wahtum.
There's a pair of logs hanging out in Twister Falls.

Re: Eagle Creek
yeah, Eagle Creek is the worst for iciness
water drips from above and freezes on the trail
the trail is narrow and you go over a cliff if you slip

Re: Eagle Creek
I once passed a guy coming the other direction on the cable section, on an icy winter day.
When we met, I stepped aside to let him go through, and just as he passed me his feet slipped on the ice and he nearly pushed me over the edge!
So yeah, next time I'm hanging on to that damn cable, and we'll just have to reach around each other.
I don't care how socially awkward it is, I'm keeping one hand on that cable at all times.

Re: Eagle Creek
On Monday I did the Tanner butte-eagle creek loop and the only way I got down the trail by Twister falls was by putting on my Katoola Microspikes. In tunnel falls the icicles were hanging down pretty far and I ended up knocking some down just to make it through.
