Ridin' the storm out, Olallie Lake 9/2 & 3

Post by pdxgene » September 3rd, 2015, 6:43 pm

Highlights from two very wet and cold days at Olallie Lake where it felt more like the first week of November than September. Starting a bit after 9a yesterday up behind the cabin area at Olallie Lake..
Image

A brief break in the clouds at Monon Lake..
Image

Along the Monon Lake Trail..
Image

Image

Well, hullo there...
Image

The gentian meadow post bloom still had some nice color..
Image

Continuing on the Monon Lake Trail...
Image

And it rained..
Image

Where the view of Mt Jefferson would normally be from the Olallie Lake day use area..
Image

Hiding from the rain, wind and cold..
Image

As the clouds begin to lift on Olallie Butte (my blue Honda in the background..)..
Image

Image

And after a gray, kinda miserable weatherwise day the clouds begin to lift for a dramatic sky show at sunset..
Image

Image

With bonus raindrops..

Image

The finale..

This morning along the Red Lake Trail...
Image

Timber Lake..
Image

Timber Lake Trail colors..
Image

Image

Pearly everlasting at Monon Lake..
Image

The only one I'd see on the trails... both days...
Image

Monon Lake Trail in the full sun this time..

Pearly everlasting and Olallie Butte from the Olallie Lake Trail..

At this point I saw Mt Jefferson begin to peak from the clouds and knew I need 10 minutes at least to get to a good spot. Luckily it lasted about 15. The only really good view of the mountain and fresh snow out of both days..
Image

Image

Image

And that was the end of that...
Image

And it poured.. (luckily after I got back this time, unlike Wednesday when I got soaked..)..
Image

The sky show continued..
Image

Leading to the parting shot about 4pm before the ride back down the hill and home..

Slide show from a great , though wet, trip here... :D

The fall colors have already hit peak and tons of huckleberry leaves already covered the ground. Everything is early this year..

Another gorgeous report from Olallie. This is the year that I have to get there! Sooner, rather than later, too!

Thanx! If you can get out there on a sunny day the next week or maybe two the reds of the huckleberries should still be great! They line the trails for long stretches. There were tons more in the shadows or further off the trail that really don't show in the pictures.

Great pics! I'm headed back down there in a couple weeks.

Did the cabin have posted when they are shutting down?

Thanx! On their availability listing on their website it looks like the last day of cabin rentals is Oct 10th though both Saturdays' in October are listed as full at the moment.
