Tanner Creek & Wahclella Falls (May 17)
How many times have I been to Tanner Creek this year..? Enough to prove Sean right, I suppose..! Made a couple trips last week, one to lead a Gorge Friends photo hike and the second to take a few photos myself! Here are some pics from the second trip...
Stream scene along Tanner Creek:
5-image pano from the bridge at Wahclella Falls -- made possible by arriving very, very early in the morning..!
A new (but non-native) flower along the trial -- Dame's Rocket (thanks for the ID, Greg Lief!)
Mother and youngster garter snakes along the banks of Tanner Creek:
...also spotted a fence lizard just a foot away from the snakes! I would have guessed that garter snakes snack on fence lizards, but maybe that's just too big a meal, so harmony prevailed on that sunny rock.
Corydalis flowers -- among my favorites:
A 7-image pano from the middle of Tanner Creek!
...because you can't have too many panos! Want to see a really large version?
Click here for the jumbo edition!
...and for those using phones, a clip from the large pano:
The key to getting that view of Wahclella Falls are these:
...and very numb feet, of course. It only hurts when the feeling starts to return... about 30 minutes after you've got your boots back on...
As always, another lovely day at Tanner Creek!

Thanks! Tanner Creek is definitely busy on weekends -- very early or evening would be a good time... or mid-week. The USFS is also strictly enforcing parking now, so the overflow beyond the dozen or so spaces at the TH is up at the Tooth Rock TH (go right, then left from the freeway) or over at Bonneville Dam. Neither add too much distance, just some road walking. Some people were parking on the shoulder of the off-ramp from I-84 and I wouldn't recommend that....

Gorgeous photos - I especially like the one of the mom & baby snakes!
If anyone decides to park at Bonneville Dam, please take all the usual precautions you would take at any trailhead. Several vehicle breakins have been reported there.

Aargh! That's disappointing to hear... I'm surprised they don't have full-blown security cameras out there. Weird! If anyone decides to park at Bonneville Dam, please take all the usual precautions you would take at any trailhead. Several vehicle breakins have been reported there.

Great photos Tom - especially the one of the snakes. I was there for the first time the day before. I was able to snag the one open spot in the TH parking lot when I got there about 4 in the afternoon.
Thanks,
Mike J
