Lewis River

Post by drm » April 20th, 2015, 6:13 pm

A few of us did a wonderful backpack on the Lewis River last weekend. We started at Lower Falls and hiked south about 6 miles. There were quite a few bikers and others. Some of the creeks required careful rock hopping to keep the feet dry on slippery stones. Water levels appeared to me to be mid-summerish.

Great pics, Dean, especially that last one. I love waterfall pictures that look like waterfalls! (Hope that doesn't derail your thread... )

Forgot to mention: there were some mosquitoes and even a few biting black flies. I didn't get any bites, but others in the group got a few.

Great pictures, Dean! I too like waterfalls in still captures. :D Very nice green color too.

I've only been through the upper section of this trail, but it was beautiful. Lush, green, mossy scenery among massive old growth along a beautiful river. If all goes as plan, I'll be hiking this lower section in a few weeks or so.

How was the trail? Were there any downed trees across the trail?

Nice! Well, apart from the mosquitoes. Do they always show up so early there?

Agreed on both counts. Or maybe all three...

There were a few big trees down in the 6 miles we hiked. One of our group kept on commenting on how much the area reminded him of the Olympics, so you can imagine the kinds of trees that can block the trail here. But I expect either the FS or a biking group will get to them soon. It's not wilderness so chain saws can be used.

As to the bugs, I don't think they are normally out now there, but I wasn't the one getting bitten, so I might not have noticed or thought to mention it if it had been a solo trip.

Brilliant waterfall pic and I loved the clear green creek picture.

Mushrooms from Lewis River. A nice overnight trip.
