Big Huckleberry Mtn 2/28/2015

Post by jime » March 3rd, 2015, 8:38 pm

New snow and sun – great combination for the day! Big Huckleberry Mtn was our objective. We followed some fresh animal tracks along the PCT from the Crest Horse Camp TH. Traveling south the trail skirts the edge of the Big Lava Bed. Other than the animal tracks, we only saw one lone backpacker (NB) and three mountain bikers. Summit had the most snow, but at 4,200 ft only about 3 to 4 inches. More than a few recent blow downs on this PCT section, but nothing difficult to deal with. A few pictures of the usual suspects (volcanoes) here.

Stats – about 14 miles round trip and 1,000 ft EG. TH is about 1½ hour drive from Portland. (Paved Panther Creek road 65, then right onto road 60 for 2 miles).

Mmm…. fresh snow under blue skies! Love that. I'm surprised there was so much more at that elevation than in the Mount Hood area… must be that northern latitude on the north side of the river..! ;)

Nice photos - thanks for posting!

Tom :)
