Hidden in plain sight: Wonders of Coastal Oregon - 2-23-15

Post by Sean Thomas » February 26th, 2015, 7:17 am

My gf jojomachine and I had an awesome time at the beach last weekend exploring some familiar and not so familiar highlights of the northern coast. Most of the hiking done on the trip was off trail(Onion Peak, exploring Ecola Creek waterfalls) so this is just a highlight of some of the wonders of the tidal zones as well as a few sunset/critter shots etc. Sunday night we were treated to an incredible sunset at Haystack Rock, just a day before Joie's 25th birthday and the mark of our 7th year together :)

One hilarious part about watching the sunset at the most popular spot on the Oregon Coast is the elitist photographers who take to the sands just before the sun goes down. Most of them were set back from the waters edge about 40-50 feet, where one brave couple took to the water line, blocking several of the photographers(for about 5 seconds tops  . You would have thought they were blocking blood to the brain or something as anytime a person would step up to the waters edge, the photographers would scream and shout, "hey, HEY! get out of the way!!" or, "excuse me, excuse me!!" in voices filled with anger. We weren't brave enough to get in their way so we just watched from the sidelines :D but if there was ever a case of, "get over yourself!" this was it:

First of all, Happy birthday Joie. Great report. Those sunset shots are fabulous. I always love your tide pool photos. Your photos just seem to be getting better and better if that is even possible. Keep up the good work.

Nice shots @ sunset. Love that opener. Also cool macros of the barnacles, and the OWL! Awesome! Since I moved to Oregon in '07 I just didn't "get" the draw of the coast. Everytime I go, I'm always like, "It's nice, but why do people love coming here?" I always head East to the mountains. February has so far been devoted to getting out there and seeing what I have been missing. My trip to the Olympic coast was AMAZING, but I think I liked it b/c it wasn't developed at all and there was nothing to detract from the beauty of nature (except Fukushima garbage :x ). I also loved seeing the marine life! Next weekend I'm going to Cascade Head area to hike. You guys seem to love the coast and it's fun seeing your reports and getting ideas for next time. Cheers!

Amazing sunsets... :)
As for the self-proclaimed professional photographers... there's a few hundred miles of beach along the Oregon Coast. The vast majority of it is deserted. If they want solitude at sunset they don't have to go far or look hard.....

Nice sunset pictures of Haystack Rock.

I was there this last weekend to take sunset pictures, but there were no clouds in the sky, so the orange sunset was limited to the horizon.
Here is one of my pics of haystack rock, not as colorful as yours though.
