Seattle traffic can be horrid...but then so can Portland's. If you can survive one, you can survive the other. But going via Yakima might be the best route anyway.

Seattle traffic much worse - more traffic, for more miles, on more highways

I always go via Yakima

The roads are OK although they have a lot of washboards. Nothing needing high clearance or anything, but some of the washboards are pretty jarring.

Anne it was such a great few days! This my first foray into this alpine jewel box will always glow in my memory.
