About a week ago, we were up on Tanner Road for a conversational stroll. Spotted an alligator lizard, a scorpion, then involuntarily brought home two Western Blacklegged Ticks.
How fast? Shutter speed on the 5th photo was 1/80th second.

Re: scorpions and ticks on Tanner Road 777
Scorpions are beautiful creatures IMO.
I've been very lucky in regards to ticks, but I'm not depending on luck any longer. I'm treating my hiking clothes with permethrin this year to see how that works out. I already hate mosquitoes, so repelling ticks is a bonus for me. More research needs to be done about the toxicity of dried permethrin on fabric and skin contact, but it looks promising.

LLLLLLOOOOVE scorpions- Uroctonus mordax. They're completely harmless and are just really neat arachnids. Ticks suck, though. Sawyers permethrin spray is the stuff. I am from KS and it literally changed my life as far as being outdoors- ticks and chiggers are an incredible problem there. Follow the instructions on the spray can- I used to get ~1000 ticks on me and probably ~50 bites a year until I started using this stuff and in the last 3-4y I was there I can't remember 10 total ticks on me. Well worth it.

The dreaded tick seems to be more prevalent this year! I haven't had to use my "tick spoon" yet but we have seen more ticks this year already than in all previous years combined & we are hiking the same areas.
As an example our group removed 5 from a hike up Cook Mountain last week & a further 2 still made it back to one of our groups home before being found! Previous trips to Cook have been tick free!

That scorpion is exactly like the one that stung me on Ruckle Ridge a couple of weeks ago.Harmless or not, you'll jump high when struck.

Buy it in higher concentrations from Amazon and dilute it yourself. $ave money. Spend it on gas to go hiking instead. Profit in more ways than one.johnsjor wrote:Sawyers permethrin spray is the stuff.

Re: scorpions and ticks on Tanner Road 777
I have a several year old bottle of Sawyer Permethrin
It's probably about expired so I should throw it away
Fortunately I didn't get the big bottle and dilute it myself. Then I would have a much bigger amount that would have expired. Plus. I hate handling concentrated poison. I'de rather just spray on the diluted stuff and have less contact.
But I don't use much. Spray on gaiters and boots once a year maye. If I used it more then diluting it would make more sense
