My girlfriend I hiked part of the lower Lewis River Trail yesterday. The old growth Doug-fir, Cedar, Maple and Cottonwood were draped in mist and fog further elevating the prisitine feel of the forest.

About 2 1/2 to 3 miles in we passed the historic Bolt Camp Shelter. The shelter was built by the Forest Service in 1921 to harvest cedar bolts for a settlement down river. It was restored in 1991 and even has a sign posted on the inside with a telephone number to call if anyone is interested in further restoration:
Most of the pics turned out like this yesterday:

After the hike I walked the short path that leads over to Curly Creek Falls, which was framed in the yellows and oranges of fall:

Looks awesome!
Is the Lewis River portion the same hike as described in the field guide?

I dont think so TJ, if it is the description below you're thinking of. We started our hike near Curly Creek Falls. The falls on the Lewis are further upstream on a little more popular stretch of trail but they are all worth visiting.

That shelter looks sweet for a rainy season backpack! Great photos of Curly Creek Falls, too - if I was a climber I'd scramble up in between the two arches and check the pool above (can dream ).

Nice photos of the old growth! I would have been there this past weekend, but family stuff took over. That Bolt Camp Shelter is looking decidedly worse for wear since the last time I saw it, but it still looks quite dry inside!
