Substation Fire - The Deschutes

Post by drm » July 21st, 2018, 7:43 am

I have been told that the "ghost town" 11 miles in the Deschutes River trail, as well as that old wooden boxcar 6 miles in, are history. It's mostly grassland and that grass and bushes come back from a grass fire in a season mostly, but it would be a shame if the riparian trees next to the river were also lost.

That's too bad. I have slept in that boxcar before. Same thing happened up river, that boxcar burned up too. That area recovered from that fire fine.

You can see the Eagle Creek Fire, last year's Whitewater Fire at Mt Jefferson, and this year's first three big brush/wheat fires near the Dalles.

I read that the Harris Canyon Ranch buildings are gone, and photos by Beth Nakamura for the O back that up. Though it looks like the poplar trees in the ODFW fields may have survived. That would be nice. I'll definitely miss that big ponderosa tree right by the Harris buildings.

I keep writing longer messages and it keeps logging me out and deleting everything I wrote.

Charley, I'm having the same problem. Lower deschutes destroyed right down to the water.

That's too bad.

It'll be interesting to go check out next winter or whenever they allow people in there.

are forest fires getting more frequent than they used to or is it just my imagination?
