Hawaii eruption

Pictures like this:

remind me of walking around in Three Sisters (except it's cold, no flaming spots :) )

Most recent eruption 1500 years ago, so new eruptions could happen at any time

Seems like an enterprising recycler could be licenced to go in there and scavenge asphalt, wiring, etc, in advance of the lava.
I'm being mostly facetious, but who knows, maybe it could be economically feasible.

I was just there a few months ago and paid someone $40 to take a guided hike to an active lava flow...if only I had known...

That must have been a pretty good experience.

I've looked out over the kilauea crater which was good, although not active at the time

I'm trying to avoid using the word "cool" :)

I'm so tempted to just buy a ticket and GO. I don't even care how much they charge for those boat tours to see the lava entering the ocean, i wanna see it.

How close do they let you get? I don't want to breathe fumes laced with microscopic glass shards.

With the park closed and authorities only letting residents into the affected areas you can't get very close. Probably easier to just watch the videos and the releases of info from the park's website. check you tube, too. Lots of good videos of the eruption there. Some are even live streamed.

I was there a couple of years ago and watched the eruption from the volcano observatory. The closest I could get was about a mile away. Pretty neat to see the eruption at night:

It's not so impressive in the daytime:

Of course, this was before the rift opened up down below but I'm not so sure I'd want to be too close to that!
