Amazon said "Amazon has not received confirmation from the supplier of your order that they sourced the item from a recommended manufacturer. We recommend that you DO NOT use this product to view the sun or the eclipse"
I already used them. I can see nothing when I look at normal things. A very intense light is very faintly visible. I can see the sun but it's not at all bright.
I suppose it's possible it doesn't filter out non visible UV or something, but I didn't notice any bad effect.
I'll probably just use it regardless.
I suppose I could get one from some local store.

Re: amazon eclipse viewing glasses
Stare at the sun through them for an hour. If you're not blind yet, then all should be okay!
I think you got a lawyer's statement, protecting Amazon from the inevitable few people who will use defective gear.

in 1979 I used exposed photographic film
Re: amazon eclipse viewing glasses
Yeah I got the same message along with a promised credit.
Since I've got some off cuts left over from a solar camera filter I made I'll probably cut the current lenses out and stick a piece of this film over the holes instead.

Why do you need to go to Amazon? Target, Winco, Safeway, 7-11, etc all have eclipse-viewing glasses. Next time you go get milk, pick up a pair of 99-cent glasses.

At least around here both Fred Meyer and Wal-Mart are both out. The floor mgr at Wal-Mart said people had come in and bought them 100 at a time when that recall got publicized. It might not be worth their effort to transfer inventory around between stores or order more at this point.
But I'm sure those people that bought them in bulk did it solely to help their fellow man....

I ordered something nicer from Amazon, a pair of goggles, better for hangin' out for a while. Yesterday they were delivered - to Tennessee (third party thru Amazon). They responded right away that they thought they could get them resent to me in time, but I didn't want to count on that. I called my local optometrist, who had a $1 pair to sell to me.

I got some cheap ones from Fred Meyer $1.99
You don't really need nice ones, just occasionally glance up at the sun and see how much of it has been eaten

I don't need nice ones, but I want them. Picture this. A reclining backpacking chair. Sitting back. Hands clasped behind my neck. With my goggles on.
No holding flimsy cardboard things in front me.
